Increase in COIDA monthly pensions on the cards

An increase in monthly pensions in terms of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act is on the cards.

The employment and labour department published the proposed increase in Government Gazette 48187 for comment.

The department plans to increase monthly pensions payable in terms of Section 49(4) and 54(1) (a), (b), (c) and (d) by 7.5% with regard to accidents that occurred before 31 March 2023 as well as occupational diseases diagnosed before 31 March 2023.

The increase will apply from 1 April 2023.

The department also seeks comment on its intention to amend Schedule 4 on the manner of calculating compensation for accidents that occur from 1 April 2023 as well as occupational diseases diagnosed from 1 April 2023.

Minimum and maximum compensation is set down.

Comments are invited within 60 days of the date of publication.

The department also announced an increase in the maximum amount of earnings on which the assessment of an employer shall be calculated.

An amount of R568 959 per employee per annum is prescribed as the maximum amount on which an assessment of an employer shall be calculated with effect from 1 March 2023.
