Water-use licence applications under the spotlight
29 Jul 2022
The department of water and sanitation is focused on finalising water-use licence applications within 90 days.
In a statement, the water and sanitation department pointed out that the “new turn-around time is part of government’s strategies to enhance the delivery of economic reforms through Operation Vulindlela which is aimed at fast-tracking service delivery across various sectors of society”.
Previously, the department aimed to finalise applications within 300 days.
The department also revealed that it has, in order to fast-track the conclusion of applications backlogs, conducted a diagnostic study into factors causing delays in water-use authorisation and recommended interventions to improve efficiency.
Interventions to improve efficiency include setting up water authorisation units at the department’s provincial offices with adequate capacity and skills, revising water use licence templates, minimising system downtime and addressing connectivity challenges associated with the online portal.
