Many organisations and universities in South Africa take part in research projects where sensitive personal information is collected about research participants. When research data can be connected to a particular individual at any stage during the project, South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) will apply to the project. If any of the research participants are in the European Union while the research is conducted, or if research data is shared with South African universities by their European counterparts, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) may apply to the South African universities. Marrying research data management, academic freedom and principles such as open access with the principles of data protection is complex and challenging.
