Breaking away from BigLaw to start Alternative Service Providers

August 15, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Alternative Service Providers

The world of BigLaw is changing, and many top lawyers have broken away to start Alternative Service Providers, while some tech companies have joined forces too.

Join us for an evening of personal stories from a few of these breakups, where they will share the reasons they broke away, the challenges they faced and how they feel and fare in the future world of NewLaw.

The stories are followed by a harvest table with some wine to get to know the speakers better and mingle with future-thinking friends.

Speakers sharing their stories:

Eitan Stern from Legalese

Ethian is the founder and director, he is a practising attorney with a background in commercial and entertainment law and tech entrepreneurship. Eitan has worked with sectors across the board, from creative, advertising and media, to educational, non-profit and technology industries. He’s an established public speaker, lecturer, mediator, and DJ.

Yvonne Wakefield from Caveat Legal

Having completed her BA (law) and LLB at Stellenbosch University and a diploma in International Law at Antwerp University, Yvonne joined Bowman Gilfillan Inc in Cape Town as a candidate attorney. After concluding her articles, she was admitted as an attorney in the Cape High Court. Later that year she was admitted as an advocate and went on to undertake her pupillage at the Cape Bar, where she practiced until taking time off to have children. During her time away from practice, she taught and assessed at UCT’s law faculty, completed a Masters degree in commercial law and tax at UCT, and qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Rico Burnette from Exigent

Rico Burnett is Director of Client Innovation at Exigent. He practised Technology and Intellectual Property law at two of SA’s largest law firms before joining Exigent in 2013. Rico is obsessed with harnessing ideas, embracing technology and building legal teams to enable companies and law firms to meet the challenges (and exciting opportunities) that exist in our ever-changing world. Rico is a married and a father to two young boys and a baby girl. He is undecided on the Game of Thrones finale.
