The inaugural African GC Summit, held in Cape Town, South Africa on February 15-16, 2024, was a resounding success. The event brought together 350 of the top in-house counsel from 23 countries across Africa for two days of networking, education, and discussion around the future of in-house legal teams on the continent.

Organised by The GRM Group and Law Ninjas, the African GC Summit featured over 40 expert speakers and panellists from top companies and law firms.

Major topics included building high-performing legal teams, integrating technology and AI, developing ESG initiatives, strengthening data privacy protections, and supercharging efficiency.

The Summit opened with welcome remarks from Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. Major sponsors included 10 top international law firms and legal technology providers. The event was held at the iconic V&A Waterfront, providing a spectacular backdrop for attendees.

“The African GC Summit exceeded our expectations in bringing together the top legal minds across Africa to collaborate and share insights,” said Rob Green, CEO of The GRM Group. “The feedback has been incredibly positive, and we look forward to making this an annual tradition where the top in-house counsel on the continent can connect and discuss strategies for success.”

Among the highlights were sessions on leveraging natural language processing in legal intelligence tools, establishing effective ESG programmes, and building world-class legal teams. Attendees left the African GC Summit energised and inspired, with new peer connections across Africa.

“This Summit highlighted the growing sophistication and strategic importance of in-house legal teams across Africa,” said Rohan Bilimoria, CEO of Law Ninjas. “By learning from one another and adopting global best practices, general counsel in Africa can drive success for their companies and the business landscape as a whole.”

The organisers thank the attendees, speakers, sponsors, and the city of Cape Town for making the inaugural African GC Summit a landmark event. Plans are already underway for the next Summit in 2025.
